(As the magic duel began, Solar's family and friends sat along the sidelines. At the Royal Viewing post sat Princess Celestia; the Founder of the School for Gifted Unicorns. Beside her sat Princess Twilight and Crescendo, taking notes along side a few other judges.)

Twilight: *whispering to Crescendo as she watched the show* You did a wonderful job of teaching her, Crescendo. Solar Flare has improved greatly these past few weeks.

Crescendo: She really has, she's doing amazing.. but - *stares at Blazing Ember* I'm starting to fear it's still not enough.

Twilight: Why do you say that? You don't have faith in your student?

Crescendo: It's not that I don't have faith in her, it's just -

(And just as he was about to answer, he was cut off by a very familiar voice)

Sunset: She is over confident..

Twilight: *glances over at Sunset Shimmer, who just walked up and took a seat beside Crescendo* Sunset..?

Sunset: *staring at her daughter on the field* I know that look.. It's the same expression I once had.. right before I failed.

Twilight: Oh, Sunset, Crescendo taught her very well. I'm sure she knows exactly what she is doing.

Sunset: Perhaps, but I can't help but worry that Crescendo may be correct.

(The three stared back out at the field)

Solar: Ugh! *groaning, she shot a fireball of magic towards Blaze, who of course, dodged it with ease - thinks to herself* "I'm getting a little tired.. I can't let this happen! I have to win this.. I WILL win this! I need to win this! I CAN win this!"

Blaze: What's the matter, Solar? Running out of steam already?

Solar: This is only the beginning Blaze! Keep it coming!

(The duel progressed and back and forth magic filled the field, blinding and aweing the audience and startling them when some sparks would stray a bit off course, when finally Solar and Blaze met at a draw; sending their magic lazoring towards one another to clash in the middle)

Solar: *Solar's head began to hurt, but she clenched her jaw and held it together; keeping her magic beaming* "I.. I can't hold it much longer.. How is he - What?!" *She glances through the magic and sees Blazing Ember barely flinching, using the exact same spell as she was, which was draining her energy faster than anything - It didn't even phase him* "How is he not.. He's holding back.. He's holding back?!"

(After realizing this, Solar Flare shut her magic off and quickly dodged as Blaze's magic went soaring by her)

Solar: What are you doing?! *screaming at Blazing Ember*

Blaze: What are you talking about? We're dueling.

Solar: You know what.. You're holding back! Why are you holding yourself back?!

Blaze: I - That's ridiculous.

Solar: What, do you think I'm not strong enough to truly fight you? Come on, stop holding back and show me the talent that everypony has talked about. She me your true power, show me the REAL Blazing Ember! You said you wanted a challenge, here I am!

Blaze: *stares at her in surprise for a moment, then sighs a bit and hangs his head, then picks it back up and stares directly into her eyes* Very well then...

(And within the blink of an eye, the field errupted in a blindingly bright glowing magic aura, and all that is left that the crowd could hear were the faint, muted cries)

Sunset: *Gasps and stands up* Solar?!

Twilight: *throws her hoof over Sunset to calm her* Wait, these duels do not allow usage of spells that could do any pony harm... Just wait! Blazing Ember would not break that rule..

Sunset: *clearly still worried, Sunset nods at Twilight trusting in her, and sits back down waiting for the magic dust to clear*

(As the magic dust clears, the crowd sees one pony standing and one collapsed on the ground)

Crescendo: *gasps and then sighs sadly, realizing the pony defeated on the ground was Solar Flare* She.. She lost..

Solar: *staring at the grass between her hooves, it takes her a few moments to realize what just happened to her* How? ... How did I lose? I thought ... I thought I could-

(Solar stopped talking when she saw two hooves approach her and offer a hoof to help her up)

Blaze: I'm sorry Solar, did I hurt you?

Solar: ... No. *takes his hoof and stands up* Not physically at least.

Blaze: If it helps at all, you were still the strongest opponent I've battled in quite some time?

Solar: *tears welling up* That means nothing to me now.. I'll never get into this school now!

Blaze: Sure you will... I promise you, you will.

Solar: Yeah.. maybe next year. *Solar wiped her tears and began walking away, with her head down* At least next year, it won't be you I'm competing against..
